The legendary TRAX Records has become equated with The Original Home of House Music in Chicago and worldwide. Trax Records defines its genre and the legendary label and invented Acid House. His first productions were co-written, under the name of D. Kontrol with Jon Nuccle, and were released on the Belgium labels, 2 Thumbs, Mineral and Growth which were all the in-house labels of Frank De Wulf, one of the original creators of the European techno sound at the back end of the 80's)

Since then, mixes have been created for various artists and labels, including Glenn Wilson on Planet Rhythm, Heroes, Aphrohead (aka Felix Da House Cat) on Bush Records (Area 51 mix), Thomas Krome's Bitches from Hell on Corb (Cold Dust mix).

Mike has concentrated more on producing tracks for his own labels.
Punish, the sleazy sounds of dirty Techno, raw and pumping. Together with Glenn Wilson, Mike has created some memorable vinyl, bringing a truly unique label, that for many was the start of a new sound in techno at that point. There will be more from Punish, with Glenn now fully at the controls, new releases will again appear with the Punish imprint.

With the tough and uncompromising label Red Seal in the early daze, recording under the name H, he created the World Downfall series (big hitters on the Fuse presents series for incredible Dave Clarke), 2 Thieves and was responsible for some serious lives PAs as Cold Dust with Nuccle

He was also behind the limited release series, the dark sounds of Black and White records, and was a guilty party for the street beats of Player Records, the in-house label of the Orbit UK (R.I.P.) The one time special resident was firmly rooted in the clubs production seat, along side Nuccle and others, bringing anonymous releases to the Player label that were also remixed by some of the best artists around, to create a truly unique vibe at that time. These projects have been remixed by some of Chicagos finest new skool producers, DJ Bam Bam, DJ Urban and Angel Alanis, as well as the old skool artists such as Joey Beltram, Adam Beyer, Marco Bailey and Mark Broom, Ben Simms on the Player Remixes label.

Mike left all of these projects behind him at the end of 2003 to make way for his most recent project, Mastertraxx, which began in 2004. This again is a label for the techno purists looking for the underground club buzz

Mike has DJ'd and thrown live sets in clubs all around the world and was recently featured on Death Disco Radio.

On the 24th of July Duisburg will be the capital of the electronic beats: With the theme „The Art of Love“ a unique gathering of the international DJ Elite will take place at the former goods station area.

This year the anthem of the Loveparade 2010 was created by the DJ and Producer Anthony Rother. In the upcoming years we want to give other stars of the scene the opportunity to bring their creativity into the Loveparade. 16 elaborately designed floats (parade wagons) will fire off the beats and basses of the anthem at 2 pm (14:00 h) as the starting signal to the biggest party in den world.

The stage of the final ceremony is placed directly in front of the former goods station area. Its industrial charm as the setting combined with perfectly adjusted stage and light design guarantee a breathtaking visual experience. For the first time in the history of the Loveparade there will be a second stage – the Love Stage.

The ones who can’t be in Duisburg to celebrate have the possibility to join the party on every media channel. Oliver Pocher will be presenting the official Loveparade Show for the first time, supported by his companion Sandy Meyer-Wölden. You can watch the 3-hours-long show at www.bild.de. At this website you can follow the day of the event all day long. Thanks to the cooperation with the Live-Stream-Portal UStream.tv you can watch the event for the first time in HDTV quality and as worldwide novelty with the opportunity to choose out of 30 cameras to create an individual show with your favorite scenes. Since the inception in the late 80s,WNUR's foremost goal has been to play the most forward-thinking, cutting-edge, underground dance music the world has to offer. Their programming on the station six nights a week covering material from industrial to progressive, hip-hop to tech house.

From the beginnings of house music in Chicago, WNUR has brought to the airwaves a side of dance music that doesn't get exposure elsewhere on the dial, in the clubs, or even in the party scene. While WBMX's Hotmix 5 were playing the latest local cuts during house music's big explosion, WNUR's role was playing the imports. Such legendary DJs as Derrick Carter and Mark Farina held shows on WNUR in the late 80s/early 90s. In the mid 90s, DJ Snuggles' Strictly Jungle show gained national recognition for being the first weekly drum 'n bass show in the country. Other artists on 89.3 include: Aux 88, Shaka 23, Josh Werner, TRS-80, DJ T-1000, Frankie Vega, Derek Fisher, Mike Wade and more. Their present mission is to provide Chicago and the world with a source of consistently good underground electronic/dance music in all its variety, both new and old, whether local or imported.

Wolfgang Flur Interview

The Agency invited Nico Demonte to submit questions for the Wolfgang Flur interview. Wolfgang Flür (born 17 July 1947) is a German musician, best known as a member of Kraftwerk, the electro-pop group, from 1973 to 1987, playing electronic drums. Flür also built much of the group's studio and stage equipment in his workshop below the band's Kling Klang studio.

Previously he had played a conventional acoustic drum kit in the Düsseldorf band The Spirits of Sound. (Another member of this band was guitarist Michael Rother, who also spent a few months as a member of Kraftwerk in 1971, before forming Neu! with then Kraftwerk drummer Klaus Dinger.)

Flür is now the founding member of Yamo, who released an album Time Pie in 1997, produced in collaboration with Mouse on Mars. Flür's next release, the 12" and remix 12" "I was a robot" climbed to number 6 in the German club charts. Collaborations with Pizzicato 5 and Der Plan founding member Pyrolator have been announced, and the lyrics to the song "Greed" are in Flür's autobiography, but this material remains unreleased.

Flür also wrote an autobiography, published in the year 2000, called I Was a Robot, showing the inner workings of Kraftwerk from the beginning. This book met with hostility and litigation from his former Kraftwerk colleagues Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider. The original Hannibal Verlag edition was soon withdrawn, following an injunction, but the book was republished in English and Japanese, with removal of a couple of embarrasingly homoerotic photos of Schneider and Emil Schult and re-wording of certain sections, for instance, Flür no longer claims that the composition "Metal on Metal" was his idea; the idea was "probably" Hütter's, and he must have got the idea when he heard Flür banging away building stuff. However, most of the court attention centered around the recording of the song "Autobahn", and this point was decided in Flür's favor: The German court found that Flür did play drums on the Autobahn album. It is odd that Hütter and Schneider would take offence at this claim, since they credited him for doing so on the original edition of the album, and even later, credit-less, editions carry a band photo with Flür and his drum kit center stage.

WOLFGANG FLUR INTERVIEW:

How did your musical career start?

With music, music copying, music listening and practicing drumming.
In fact it was classical music which inspired me first, then pop music

Which musical composers and artists were your favorites growing up as a child?

Abram Khatchaturian, Bedrich Smetana, Boris Ravel, George Gershwin, The Beatles, The Who,
King Crimson, Emmerson, Lake and Palmer, Jimi Hendrix and Katja Epstein.

How did you join Kraftwerk in 1974?

I was invited by the duo. This already happend in 1973 during my education for interior architect.
I can recall it was during one of the hottest July days in the early seventies

What was your inspiration for building the instruments in the Kraftwerk's Kling Klang studio in Dusseldorf?

I didn't want to play on their tiny children's drumkit at public appearances but their lovely rhythm box instead.
I just had to think how to play it like drums.

You worked with custom-built drum controllers, containing 6 metal pads and drum-sticks with wires attached to them,
which by the way was an ingenius idea, for that time! [Machine Music]. Who came up with the idea?
How did this unique idea work and evolve over the years?

It was my idea in fact, and Florian followed it. I built the drum pads board then in a cellar of the BERGER ALLEE 9.
I didn't build the rhythm box, it already existed.

What were your favorite songs playing on stage in the 13 years, you were part of Kraftwerk?

"Autobahn", "The Model", "Trans Europe Express", "Tanzmusik", "Computer World",
"Computer Love" and last but not least "Pocket Calculator".

No doubt you must have a "museum" of old synthersizers, hand built equipment and precious "artifacts",
people want to know everything about. Could you give the reader a glimp, what kind of equipment you have in your vault[s]?

You will not believe it: I have nothing at all! Today I'm more the visionary in Yamo and songwriter.
I'm not so much the sound builder, this is more my partner Stefan. We have a genious partnership [as I always wanted to]:
Stefan has all old and new devices in his computer, software and hardware next to the desk, and we discuss every tone and
sound very extensivly. Mostly I sing the sounds to Stefan or into the microphone and he can realize all I have in my mind.
I'm a perfect synthesizer...

Since you are one of the few people who changed music and the way we look at it
What is your opinion on today's music industry and the "switch" between "Analog" and "Digital"?

I have no doubt at all. We take what we need - digital and analogue. Analogue has more pressure and is most interesting,
but we also use samples and loops for Yamo productions besides of naturally sung words.
I love to be vocodered in Stefan's style with the Variophrase 9000 for example. Can you hear it out?.

What decided you to write your book "I Was A ROBOT" [ Ich war ein ROBOTER. Mein Zeit als Drummer bei Kraftwerk ]?

It was a matter of my soul. Otherwise it was the U.S journalist Dave Johnson [Goldmine] who begged me to write
all my stories down for the rest of the world. For myself I had to make a cut between the old times and the new.
With a finished book you can leave so much behind - good AND bad.....

The book brought me most interesting contacts with journalists, all kinds of media, the record industry and fans worldwide.
Seen from my side, it was good to write the book. Otherwise I know that there are people out there, who can't stand that I gave
them a look behind the scenes, they more love to preserve their defined look.

Back in the days, when you were still in the group, you all visited "The Evoluon" in Eindhoven, The Netherlands several times.
[ "The Evoluon" was kind of a Philips museum of "old" equipment ]. What inspired you to go there?

That's interesting that you know of "The Evoluon" and that we went there for several times.
Eindhoven is just around the corner of Dusseldorf and we all loved to watch these technical developments of the Time, our time!
We loved technology. We were German boys, children of Grundig, Siemens, Werner v. Braun, AEG!

I have heard that you have "unique" 8MM film footage, that was taped during the first U.S tour in 1975 of Kraftwerk?
How did you get it? And what are your thoughts in general, looking at this footage? Since it is from 30 years ago!

In fact it was my own idea to film our first U.S tour in 1975. I filmed it with my fathers tiny hand held 8MM Bell & Howell film camera.
I love the images from then very much and all our fans do when watching them during our Yamo-Spectacles, now touring in Germany.
These films were digitalized on DVD by a Dutch TV company for their culture channel RAM. We show this film in our show too.

What is your opinion on "royalties"?

Royalties are good, Royalties are important! Especially for musicians and producers. From what should we live instead?

Seen from my side - when working with my partner I love to be quick.
And I find that this is the most interesting aspect on today's musical software - quickness!
We can work so fast, finding sounds and effects for our productions. It is a blessing to our genre!

Your working with independant young artists and musicians, what inspires you to do this?

Freedom! Artistically freedom which I never had in Kraftwerk. Just listen to our next results and anyone can find out.
I'm most happy these days. Happy with Yamo and my literature project. All my partners are younger than me - much younger -
even my wife [me lucky guy]. This is a very good co-operation. I learn from them, they learn from me. It keeps me young.

What's your opinion about producing a song or demo? How does it have to sound before sending it to an A&R,
and finally get noticed among thousands of demo's, which are sent in each year? Can you give some tips?

That's a most difficult question. First it has to sound unique! Uniqueness is the most important thing of all!
Then the theme must be different and should refer to the topical scene and surrounding. Reaching an A&R is very difficult too.
[ An A&R -Artist and Repetoire - is someone who works at a record label, who listens to demo's that are sent in ]
There are so many songs that have passed and went left because some A&R's didn't hear a song,
because there is so much garbage sent out. This because most A&R's are overwhelmed by the delivery every day.

Unfortunatly, it also has something to do with luck a person has when going to be heard.
Best is to have personal contact with an A&R, before sending a demo through post [snail mail] or e-mail.
Sending in demo's through e-mail, is not a wise thing to do. From my experience this doesn't work.
Contacts - personal contacts bring it the best.

As most grand inventions, the internet has his goods AND his bads....

From the "Analog Era" to the "Digital Revolution" in 30 years.
From using custom built "Machines" in the past, to the i-pod, mobile phones, mp3 players, etc of today.
When you look back, what is your opinion on the way technology has developed over the years?

The good thing is that everyone can purchase "digital revolution", technique and play / work with it.
Nowadays, devices are tiny and light weighted. Musicians don't have to pay extra's during flights because of the overweights.

When I think of the past, and what we had to transport across the globe! For instance our first SONY video projectors...
Unbelievable.. heavy like washing machines, and we had four of them! Look at a video beamer today!
Look at the first portable CD [also SONY] and compare it with the latest i-pod, isn't that great?

I love progress any kind. The bad thing is that mankind seemingly doesn't make progress.
Not in it's behaviour and not in it's social consciousness. The young generation is being left on their
computer games, i-pods and soap opera's / tele novels on TV.

There is nothing that can educate children better than reading a book. The fantasy comes to grief.
And one who has no fantasy - what could he / she do with modern technology?
The digital revolution will bring them nothing. We in Kraftwerk had to build lots of things on our own..
And this brought fantasy in masses!

I don't really understand your question about knowledge in general [ as you always say ] but from the German meanings
I could imagine that "knowledge" is a part of doing / starting something and getting into action, of experiencing a thing / work.
To be a part of a just happening occurrence can bring knowledge and understanding. I had the great luck of sharing
the beginning of Kraftwerk's activities. It brought me knowledge for my whole life.

It was not only music, it was life itself, which brought vision. It helped me until today, lifted me up onto the Yamo scenes.

On your project Yamo - "Time Pie" [1997], you worked with Andy Toma of Mouse On Mars. How did this project evolve?

I was with "Little Child" on my way in a studio where Andy was copying something on a 24 track recorder machine.
I had problems with the result of my own work of new songs after the children's project. Andy listened to it,
and came out with the offer for a remix he wanted to do on the song I was currently working on [ my inner voice ].
What Andy did was a great result to me. And it was the beginning of a whole new project of something special,
The Yamo Music Project and the TIME PIE album.

Will there be a new Yamo album in the near future?

Of course there will! My new partner Stefan Lindlahr and I have a nearly finished album - ELOQUENCE - on our table.
I'm just dealing with a well-known London label for it's publication. The English release is very delicate to me because
England always was the country of pop music. The British love their musicians and stars.
In Germany it is difficult with this profession and the public, even in my own family. [ read my book ].

We are envitd to co-produce the new THE GRID album of David Ball.
I have already written a pop song for a soundtrack of THE GRID. It is called "Saturday Girl".

Otherwise we love to co-opertae with Marc Almond and his new album. Marc wants to make a remix,
of our "I was a Robot" song which was already in the Top Ten of Deutsche Club Charts.
Marc wants to make a special version for the gay scene and clubs.

Otherwise I have my literatur project here in Germany and love touring with my Yamo-Spectacles,
which is a mix of new Yamo songs, book chapter readings, video projections, lightenings and
dance performances by our sexy dancer Cindy Gunawan. On our website www.yamomusic.de

Recently you wrote a new book called: "neben mir - läuft wie verrückt".
What is it about and what inspired you to write it?

The book is not yet out but the manuscript ["next to me – running like crazy" ] is ready to read.
We bring different parts in our Yamo-Spectacles and our audience loves the scenes which I read to them.

The manuscript tells about very special people in our Rhineland region. "Poor" in this cohearence shall not mean
the loss of money but loss of luck, success, love and education. The short stories are mostly dragic comedy
and last about fifteen minutes each story [ seventeen all together ].

Do you have anything to add or say to your "fans" across the globe?

Death Disco Radio presents Oliver Huntemann. Bremen-based recording artist and DJ
Oliver Huntemann has been in the German scene since the beginning. Brought up in the northern German countryside, he soon found himself heavily infected by the fascinating world of music. He started taping radio shows, buying vinyl maxis and experimenting with his first pair of turntables. All due to the massive wave of innovative American youth culture and music that was invading Europe since the late 70ies, practically speaking: Rap music, break dancing and graffiti as e.g. shown in the movies Beat Street or Wildstyle or recorded by Africa Bambata, Grandmaster Flash, Kurtis Blow or Whodini, to name just a few. It didn't take long until Huntemann started spinning records on parties and it soon became clear, what he wanted to do with his life - become a DJ!

To calm his parents and get some "real and serious" education, Oliver joined the German navy forces for six years and learned how to be an electrician. But all the military drill and discipline couldn't keep him from spending all of his money for records and going to parties.
When Acidhouse invaded Germany in the late 80ies, Oliver immediately knew that this was his thing - he was totally electrified and stoked! He started organizing his first own techno parties and got to know Gerret Frerichs, who was running a club and a small recording studio, where they created the project Humate alongside the Jazz musician H.G. Schmidt ! Their first record was released in 1992 on the cult label MFS.

Huntemann is now, although he has been producing music for over 10 years, one of Germany's hottest electronic acts. Most recently because of his releases on his own 1995-founded Confused and Dance Electric labels, Anthony Rother's Datapunk and the extremely profilic Berlin-based Gigolo Records, which put out his album "Fieber" in collaboration with Confused. His "perfectly balanced tracks sitting somewhere between Chicago, electro and minimal disco" (Groove Magazine) lead him - alongside his studio partner Stephan Bodzin - to the noble honour of doing a remix of Depeche Mode's all-time classic "Everything Counts", which has turned out to be massive.

Alexander Robotnick aka Maurizio Dami is an Italian music producer. He makes his debut on the Italian music scene as the founding-member of Avida, a "dance -cabaret band" featuring Daniele Trambusti and Stefano Fuochi and releasing a 7''track "La bustina" published by Materiali Sonori in 1981.

In 1983 Alexander Robotnick attains international popularity under the pseudonym "Alexander Robotnick" and his track "Problèmes d'amour", published first by the Italian label Materiali Sonori and then by Sire-Wea , becomes a "cult track" of dance music.

In 1984 he joins "Giovanotti Mondani Meccanici" a multimedia -oriented group and composes sound-tracks for theatre works, videos and video-installations.
Still in the 80s he gains a reputation as the creator of ambient music for special events and fashion exhibitions (Pitti Immagine, Prato Expo, Capucci, Missoni) .
He also composes sound-tracks for films and theatre works by Italian directors such as Alessandro Benvenuti, Antonio Climati, Marco Mattolini, Marco Risi.

In 1987 he turns his interest to World Music, meeting African, Kurdish and Indian musicians who live in Italy and making music with them.
"Data from Africa", the band he puts up with Niba Boniface (Camerun) , stages numerous concerts until 1990.

In detail what defines jakbeat tracks has a lot to do with the jacking feeling and little to do with labels, aesthetics, or any list of synthesizers. The Jack sound exists in an endless assortment of musics. For a while it was generally known that you do not need a Roland TB303 to make ‘acid’. But as other fashions took control of our house that fundamental understanding was lost…and the aesthetic took over. A contrived image was left with the masses. Jakbeat as it has come to be known is a not just a hash back to a golden age of house, it’s not just a mess of drum beats and synths and it’s not just something that is created at random. “Jakbeat” is a state of mind and different level of musical consciousness. This sound was influenced from the early inception of dance music. Awarded in his home Italy as best ‘disco dj’ on 1978 firstly and later on 1985, in 2005 Salvatore Cusato entered the official ‘hall of fame’ of best djs of ‘disco-era’ as one of the top 100 historical djs of the planet counting 35 years of carrier behind the turntables and 22 years as italodance producer. Salvatore Cusato was born in Crotone and rised in Genoa where he started deejaying in 1971. Pioneer Professional Disc-Jockey of A.I.D. (Associazione Italiana Disc-Jockey) since the year of foundation 1975. In 1977 Salvatore was voted by a National referendum in Italy best ‘Disco-DJ’ on weekly magazine Eva-Express. In 1983 the artist debuted his producer career recording “Cybernetic Love” for CGD at Studio G in Genoa. Since then he produced and released more than 50 singles worldwide achieving Gold status in 1997 with “Comanchero” by Robin Cook (Stockholm Records/Polygram) recorded by Jonas Ekfeldt in Gotenborg (Sweden). For more than one decade (1980-90) Casco has worked as a musical journalist contributor for various European Music Magazines (Jocks Mag UK- Discomix UK – Only for Djs France – Dance Music Magazine Italy).

During 1990 Cusato reached the top ten in Euromix UK charts (Record Mirror) as Artist under the name of Cusato with his production “The Captain of her heart” (original label [[Disco[[ Magic released worldwide on Zyx-Vogue-Epic), a big hit compilation all over the planet and hit in Japan, followed by another 80’s hit in Asia, the production of “Monkey Monkey” by Flo Astaire (Avex Japan) for the legendary italo label Memory Records. Furthermore, his successful remix of “Tu” sung by the famous Italian singer Umberto Tozzi (CGD Italy). DJ Cusato made a long tour in Germany performing the “La Notte Italiana” (‘Italienisch Nacht’). In 97 he was awarded Gold as producer with “Comanchero” by Robin Cook out on Polygram worldwide: in Scandinavia this track reached the n.5 of the most sold record of the year. After the remake of “Latin America 2000” re-sung by the original artists Gibson Brothers, he worked on the remix of the classic “Don’t Let me be Misunderstood” by Santa Esmeralda. In summer 2000 Cusato started to use the nick DJ Discoking producing the disco/house track “My Love”(BMG Switzerland) for the Lake Parade: the annually giant open air rave event in Geneva .In 2001 he released a gorgeous triple cd box collector 70’s Selection by DJ Discoking^(Baur Music Switzerland). In 2002 he produced the happy techno remix “X-Files theme 2002” by DJ Dado (label Do it yourself Milano) and in summer 2004 he made another dance hit (on top in Czech Republic, Spain, Poland, Canada and Brazil) with the remake of Ricchi & Poveri 80’s hit “Sara perche ti amo” by Eu4ya ( coproduced with Dieffe Milan and out on label Do It Yourself).

Biography:

As a kid I used to go to the musicstore after school, just to find myself standing for hours enchanted by the mysterious sounds coming out from all the synthezisers that covered the walls. It was somehow the sound of the future and it allways stayed in my mind as an echo. My parents bought me a keyboard, totally unaware of the difference. I wanted to create my own sounds. Years later i bought my first real synth and a drum machine. With my Prophet 2000(sampler/synth) and my Roland 707 drummachine I started to make my first tracks. It was the early 90ties and I was totally consumed by the emerging ravescene, spending the weekends in dark clubs or in giant warehouses. These were the days that techno really went big in Sweden for the first time. One day I heard a track on my favourite radiostation that really made an impact. The guy who did the track was named Roni Size and this is how I met Drum n´Bass. No one played that music in Gothenburg at that time so we just had to do it ourself. I and a couple of friends started to buy records and doing our own partys at the legendary Magasinsgatan 17. Those who remember know these were good days. I started to dj alot and played all kinds of music. Hiphop, funk, jazz and electro, all those things took me to where I am today. I don´t see any boundarys as far as music goes, but for me as an artist techno is where I really feel a freedom of expression.

I love fashion, especially when it’s a pure form of art: Alexander Mc Queen and John Galliano are my favourite stylists, because they create exactly what they want, without respecting any rule.” He lived for 4 years in Paris, where once again he worked with stylists, and enlarged the frequentation of the world’s most transgressive clubs. His first single “Macho Boy”, in August 2003, has been performed during the opening of a Versace Houte Couture parade. Also present in the Givenchy Compilation created for Japan, in Nag Nag Nag in London, and in Radio Colette in Paris. The single has become a fashion cult worldwide. Death Disco Radio’s 1st Anniversary features DJ Hell (Gigolo label boss) for an unforgettable mix. DJ Hell (real name Helmut Josef Geier, born in Munich on September 6, 1962) has been responsible for many of the big records to come out of the Electroclash or German Squelch scene that emerged in Berlin in the mid-nineties. He is seen as the musical initiator of the 80s Revival movement later known as Electroclash popularizing the music from his hometown Munich from the mid to late 90s.

In the summer of 1977, Hell bought his first punk record – The Damned’s DAMNED, DAMNED, DAMNED (1976) – and found himself immediately hooked on the music’s febrile energy and raw, instinctive power. By 1978, Hell found himself playing records in a local nightclub. “It was a club for hippies,” he later recalled. “They really hated us.” But Hell’s night became a popular draw and he graduated to the club’s weekend slot.

With Disko B, Hell began to explore a dark, almost gothic strain of techno. Tracks like “Motherfunk” were brooding affairs that borrowed the hard, minimal feel of Jeff Mills or Robert Hood and invested it with a sense of baleful, barely restrained violence. On “Totmacher” (lit. “Dead Maker”) he blended film noire soundtracking with deep, punishing grooves.

As the name suggested (MUNICH MACHINE was originally the title of one of Giorgio Moroder’s mid-’70s projects) the album saw Hell plundering computer disco with tracks such as “For Your Love” and “Berimbau” being little more than thinly-disguised pastiches of classic Moroder/Donna Summer workouts. However, the album also contained credited cover versions including an intriguing version of The Normal’s “Warm Leatherette” (also covered by Grace Jones) and an electronic reworking of “Suicide Commando” by obscure Hanover guitar band No More, a single which Hell had played non-stop during his early career as a punk DJ and which, symbolically at least, brought Helmut Geier’s musical trip full circle.

In 2006, DJ Hell was involved in an German Intel promotional campaign involving five renowned demogroups (Andromeda Software Development, Conspiracy, Fairlight, Farbrausch and mfx), who were set out to create promotional videos using short soundclips by DJ Hell. [1]

DJ Hell’s Hit single Keep On Waiting was produced using samples as a basic track from a song titled Blurb by a New York based group known as Intense Molecular Activity. IMAs 4 track EP was released in 1980 on an independent label.

You know the saying ‘dance like nobody is watching’? transfer this to dj’ing, and you could end up with something like ‘play like there is no tomorrow. an obsessive way of spinning records. and this is exactly how you could describe the way mick wills plays. mick is not an entertainer or superstar, but one of the few true artist dj’s left, someone for whom the music is still all that matters.

mick wills starts his dj-career in 1986 at the tender age of 14, playing at small private parties in his hometown in the south of germany. he plays anything from new wave to hi nrg, and when he discovers techno, acid, and new beat in the late 80’s, there is no more stopping him. he can recite the mailorder hotline number from the hardwax record store in his sleep, but also finds old disco and funk records on fleamarkets and on record fairs.

in 1994, one night he spins together with dj hell. hell is impressed: he gives wills the chance to spin in the legendary ultraschall in munich, also based on the mixtapes that wills keeps handing over to hell. around the same time he starts organizing parties in and around the city of stuttgart with his friend isabella venis. under the moniker of ‘mb presents’ the duo bring artists like klangstabil, keith tucker, hell, anthony “shake” shakir, jonzon, claus bachor, roland casper, miss kittin and the hacker, john selway, trike, terence fixmer, jay denham, electric indigo, inform3r, legowelt, tlr, orgue electronique, i-f, rude 66 and gitano d.j. (member of the polygamy boys) to their city.

in 1996 he collaborates with klangstabil’s maurizio blanco in the studio and he knows from that moment that he wants to produce records as well as play them. as wills doesn’t like to do things half, it takes him several years to get a studio together and learn all the tricks of the trade, so on each of his following records you can hear wills’ progress in the studio.

he records his first tracks in 2001, and hell’s gigolo label immediately bites. the atomic ep that also includes a remake of bobby orlando’s “calling all the boys” by the kinky lovers (mick wills & isabella venis) is a success and two other mick wills releases for gigolo follow, with more material on the way in 2006.

while signed to gigolo, his dj-career takes off. with germany not big enough anymore, ‘the gigolo from porschetown’, spins blistering sets in places as diverse as mayday in dortmund 2005, barcelona’s loft, and clubs in valencia, moscow, london, athens, budapest, bukarest, etc. his sets are described as ‘universal, global and neo- retrolectro’. they mix the best of over 25 years of dance music in a way that few dj’s can, effortlessly switching between the cutting edge of today’s sounds and vintage chicago, detroit, italo, hi nrg, wave, acid and electro. wills is a true music freak, an avid record collector and really does play like every night is his last. again and again and again…

Death Disco Radio brings back our favorite German DJane Miss Sugar.

Seit einigen Jahren mischt in Deutschland eine zierliche und starke Frau Clubs und Bars auf. Hier ein kleines Statement wie Sie die Liebe zum DJing und zur Musik gefunden hat.

1996, mit dem ersten Besuch eines Clubs, begann der geistige Einstieg in das DJing. 2003 sollte sich dies nach 7 Jahren Gelächter auf Seiten der männlichen Kollegen nun endlich ändern. Dank eines Zufallstreffen lernte ich Steve Haze vom Klang-Syndikat kennen, der sich die Zeit nahm, mir ausführlich und mit viel Geduld das DJing nahezubringen.

Mit einer Hand voll Platten übte ich so oft ich konnte und merkte das mein Traum, das erste mal vor Publikum zu spielen gar nicht mehr so fern war. Nun hatte ich andere Gedanken im Kopf, mit denen ich mich auseinander setzen musste. Werde ich den Musikgeschmack der Clubber treffen und werden sie zu meiner Musik feiern? Diese Ängste haben sich nach meinem ersten Auftritt im Triebwerk Dresden widerlegt. Mein Ziel ist es nicht in eine Richtung gedrängt zu werden, sondern meinem Style treu zu bleiben. Für meine Zukunft wünsche ich mir dieses auch weiterhin zu erfüllen und die Menschen mit meiner Performance zu begeistern.

Auftritte mit Tok Tok , Haito , Chi , Fengari und 2Elements gaben mir den nötigen Respekt vorm Publikum und vor der Musik. Charakterlich wurde ich ausserdem durch 2 wichtige DJ`s geprägt. Grosser Dank geht an Dirk Duske und Christopher Just, die mir immer gesagt haben :” Lass Dich nicht verbiegen und lebe Deinen Traum !! “

Anfang des Jahres habe ich dann mit meinem Freund Steve Haze und meinem DJ Kollegen D.Hoax eine eigene Agentur,namens purepuremusic, gegründet. Damit haben wir uns einen grossen Traum erfüllt, weil wir Nachwuchskünstlern die Chance geben wollen in der Clubszene Fuss zu fassen. Aber bis dahin ist es noch ein langer und harter Weg, den wir aber alle gern und mit viel Spass und Hoffnung gehen wollen.

Her style varies between Progressive House and house with Electro Tech sounds. Starting to play in private parties organized by friends and some places like ¨Jackos Club¨ in Buenos Aires this 2007 she was present in SAMC with ON MUSIK Record Shop and Sónica School of Electronic Music, also being invited to several local and International radios like DLA (www.dancelatinoamerica.com), BEATBOX (www.beatbox.fm), FM Beat (www.fmbeat.com) and FRISKY (www.friskyradio.com) catching the attention of the public arriving at the residence from Wednesdays in KSK RADIO.

To the date already with some own productions like Take Your Way (Laura Seh Original Mix) and some remixes like The Power of Intimacy (Cristian Paduraru´s track) is starting her carrer like producer, thus creating her own sound, in addition to several projects like presentations in clubs, bars and preparing themselves to begin to travel abroad. The idea is not only play with cds and vinyls, but also to use effects to generate sensations in the people, or using a console with effects like the Kaos Pad. “The idea not only is play music and to amuse itself, but feel it and that people feel the same that one is transmitting”.

Influenciándose con artistas como Depeche Mode, Hernan Cattaneo, Sasha, John Digweed y otros luego de varios años Laura Seh decide crear su propio estilo. En el año 2005 decide comenzar su carrera como Dj luego de hacer el curso de Dj inicial y avanzado en la Escuela Sónica. Con el Dj Romayn como profesor comenzó a comprender la escencia y mezcla de los sonidos, así definiendo su estilo musical. En el curso de Dj Avanzado con el Dj Hernan Paredes empieza a entender la utilización de efectos en vivo, pensando utilizarlos en sus shows. Death Disco Radio features Princess Superstar whose class and looks could kill: this is Princess Superstar now, then and forever.

Concetta Kirschner has her first taste of music from her parent’s daily servings of 70’soul and rock in the suburbs of Philadelphia; tired of the quiet life, the Superstar, packs her belongings and at the age of 17 makes her return to her native New York. It’s 1994, armed with a four track, guitar, keyboards, simple sampling and air tight lyrics, she cuts her first demo immediately receiving incredible hype from the underground and from the majors who recognized her talent and futuristic vision.

After many tug of wars with majors she decides to release her first album, Stricly Platinum, on indie label 5th Beetle; co produced with Greg Talenfeld (Jon Spencer Blues Explosion) and Godfrey Diamond, best known for producing “Jungle Boogie” by Kool and the Gang.

More wise and focused, the Superstar produces and self releases in 1997 her sophomore effort, CEO, which would defy critic’s expectations and music industry categorization making her the archetype of a modern blend of hip hop and electronic music. It’s the dawn of the new millennium and the renaissance lady of electro rap has her hands wrapped around every little aspect of the business…ending the century with yet another gem, Last of the 20th century composers, in collaboration with pioneers Prince Paul and Jon Spencer…Around and about her release date, she supports her album performing along side N.E.R.D., Bjork, Z-Trip and KRS-1.

February 2002, Bad Babysitter enters the UK top 20 and is a staple for many months on MTV Europe and the Box’s heavy rotation proving that one Princess can move the masses more effectively than a prince, a Queen Mother and a prime minister. The single is featured on the later released “Princess Superstar Is” album which featured collaborations with master MC Kool Keith, the rugged and raw Bahamadia, The High and Mighty, Jzone, Mista Sinista, Herbalizer and a special collaboration with Mercury Prize winner Beth Orton. When it comes to the Hip Hop game, the Princess has it on lock down and the critics go crazy!

The unstoppable first lady then releases “Fuck me on the dance floor, produces by legendary ghetto-tech/ booty-bar impresario Disco D who has recently produced “Sky mask way” on 50 Cent’s “The Massacre”.

Tearing the clubs up like fire, the Superstar throws down on the wheels of steel from London to Japan, hyping the crowd with her mash-ups between hip hop, electro and rock; playing along side with Alexander Technique, Felix the Housecat, Tiga, ?estlove of the Root, Miss Kittin, and just about every big DJ out there.

Taking it to another level once again, she teams up with Alexander Technique, the king of mash-ups, to create the avalanche that is known on the dancefloor as DJs Are Not Rockstars driving people crazy throughout the globe; their self titled mix of 46 tracks mashed into 17 would then be unofficially released on Gigolo Records.

In 2005, her majesty upped the game by bringing on the road a live band including her long time live DJ, Alexander Technique, by creating a real life opus which would unfold the stories told in “My Machine”: a concept album about a futuristic society inhabited by clones of the Superstar. Ironically, modern day vices are explored and superficiality is served cold dirty beats courtesy of Arthur Baker, Jacques Lu Cont, Alexander Technique and Junior Sanchez to name a few.

2006 brings us the italo-disco collabo with “The Diskokaines” called “Lick the Alphabet” and “Rock a Boogie” out now. She also appears on the new Dr. Octagon record with Kool Keith on the track “Eat it.” Upcoming appearances include tracks by The Glimmers, Fetisch, Agoria, Coburn, and Larry Tee with “Licky.” As a remixer she has remixed tracks by CSS, Bassnectar, Fluffy Target and Datarock coming out soon.

2007 kicks off with a bang—her Mason vs. Princess Superstar remash of Perfect on Ministry of Sound came out January 22, debuting at #3 on the UK pop charts; and her Gigolo mix CD featuring 10 years of Gigolo Records came out in February 2007 featuring Vitalic, Miss Kittin, Traxx, Arbotique, Hell and more.

Larry’s Death Disco Radio mix has new sounds that are exclusive to Death Disco Radio. Collision is one hell of a mix. Dance summer 2007, disco electro nuveau with much excitement and thrills to keep you on the edge of your car seat.

In the nineties, Tee’s career soared as he was a key component of the internationally-popular New York Club Kids scene, making appearances on Geraldo, The Joan Rivers Show, and Inside Edition, which brought the Club Kid world — with its’ alternative views on gender, sexuality, music and fun — to the national forefront. Tee helped make the parties Lova Machine and the raucous Disco 2000 with the infamous clubkid Michael Alig. One of his biggest successes at this time, however, was co-writing the RuPaul hit, “Supermodel (You Better Work)”, which has since reached double-platinum on Billboard charts.

Tee coined the word “Electroclash” after self-styling an ambitious new project called the Electroclash Festival and it’s successful compilation. He coordinated and managed the 2001 Electroclash Festival, which helped the launch careers of Scissor Sisters, Fischerspooner, Ladytron and Peaches, who all participated in the festival. He also created and manged the nouveau-music electro girl group, W.I.T. From 1993 on, International DJ Hi-Fi Princess aka Lori Ward established herself rapidly in the underground party scene in her hometown Victoria in Canada. Her love for music evolved fast into a strong desire to start spinning.

While touring through Europe she found herself again on stage with great Djs like Joachim Garraud, Jeff Mills, Boy George, Tom Novy, Valantino Kanzyani and Adam Beyer. Additionally, the Hi-Fi Princess stood behind the decks in some of the most wanted clubs and festivals in the world! A few examples are The Tunnel in New York City, Liquid Club in Madrid, Koneisto Festival in Finland, Mazzo in Amsterdam, the Sona in Montreal, Turbo in Toronto, 1015 Folsom in San Francisco, Klub Kuaille in Tokyo and Cittadella in the Czech Republic and her residency Suncity in Graz (Austria). Loris first release was on Shimmy Recordings in 1999, her track ´Refused Entry´ came out within the ´Collective Thoughts EP´, that soon gained great reputation by some of the top Dj´s of the scene.

Leaving behind this wave of success, Lori J. Ward decided to try something new and fresh, and started to sing as well. The multitalented Lori therefore founded a new project together with Tobias Frick in 2005. The live act is called ´Phonix´ and includes her fascinating voice! Her vocal career was somehow rushing into her life. On her ´Phonix´ album ´House of Jive´ her voice is part of electro-breaks-down tempo and rockish. Death Disco Radio travels to the city of angels where DJ Loli makes the party hot. Loli was born in Ukraine, in the city Kiev. At the age of 16 she won a national competition of TV PRESENTERS for one of the most elite TV Music channels in Ukraine and got her firs Morning music show. She graduated high school and moved to England, to study psychology and film history at Oxford Brookes University in the city of Oxford, There she pursued a year of university after which she transferred herself into the London Institute of film Art in London.

Her career as a DJ started in a night club in Oxford called The Bridge, Where she came up to the DJ amazed with how bad the music was and asked him what was a deal with that. On what he told her to get her CD’s and show “whats good” with a smile on his face. Next Saturday night she came back with a selection of her music and he put her on stage. That’s where the Passion of music became the art for her. Drum’n’bass and two-step DJ Reid Speed started DJing her senior year in high school, two years after she entered New York City’s dance music community. Formally known as Reid Margolis, Speed started playing out just short of a year after she began spinning. Her local career swiftly took off, as she was soon playing at a large handful of local parties and received her first rotating residency, all within two years. Her affiliation with Stuck on Earth promotions began when founder, Chris Kausch, caught her at a local event. In April of 1998, her knowledge and experience landed her a job at DJ Dara’s record store, Breakbeat Science. Working in the well-known store exposed Speed to many promoters and artists and gave her an avenue to further her DJing. The job also lead to her residency at DJ Seoul’s Direct Drive nights. Death Disco Radio travels to Croatia where Viktoria Rebeka’s saavy skills of blending pumped-up funky electro, fierce progressive, and rockin tech house, is making her a goodwill music ambassador who keeps the crowds dancing for joy from Slovenia to Holland.

Born in Cakovec, Croatia she first became interested in becoming a DJ while living in Vienna, Austria.

In the early part of 2003 she got the opportunity to work with DJ Sunny Sava who was a resident at the famous Camera Club, located in the city centre.

There, she played double sets with him at several festivals and events all around Vienna. This included playing at The Braintribe—a 3-days event that featured 31 international DJs spinning trance-techno-house and groove music. She also played at La Gorda, a 9-days festival that included a variety of creative workshops centered around art, music, and yoga.

In 2005, she moved to Slovenia to join a group of talented DJs, working under the name Underground-Connections.

She says with a smile: I love the country. It has mountains and seaside and it is very small, with 2 million people.

In 2006 she worked with Manel, who hosts the popular Midhouse-show on Radio Pomar in Barcelona, Spain.

Looking ahead, Viktoria wishes to fully express herself as an artist, so during the weekdays, she spends time working on music with the talented producer Girandon from Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Close friend, Ron Trent, urged Farris take his hard hitting tunes to Relief Records. Trent thought Farris’s tracky sound was perfect for the early Relief. House music history was made when Farris took his demo to Relief Records. Hanging out in the Relief office was another young Chicago DJ called Sneak, who also just made his first demo. Farris and Sneak both had their tracks signed. The “Farris Wheel” EP was Farriss debut release for Relief in 1994. Gene Farris, alongside like minded musicians such as DJ Sneak, Paul Johnson, Derrick Carter, DJ Rush, Ron Trent, Boo Williams and Glen Underground formed the new wave of notorious, soon to be globe trotting Chicago DJs and producers. Deejay Ron Hardy died in 1991, and that’s the only reason why he’s not a star today. With the clubs he’s been spinning for (especially the Muzic Box from 1983 to 1988), he was drawing the way of the new sounds of the night. Something was definitely changing, and he was part of the change. You know that one day ‘Jack Has a Groove’... but did you really know when late Disco turned into early House music? Ron Hardy was it. Icon of the gay House nights of Chicago, that man was a deejay like some others are monk… it was everything for him, a sort of religion. Mixing speedy electro-pop with accelerated disco, edited disco-classics with acid tracks, when other deejays used to mix it warm… he used to mix it cold. One of his very close friends told me that he was almost never sleeping… mixing records all the time, doing weird things with his turntables. There was about nothing in his appartment, nothing but black shiny records, and a bed… and that for years since the 70’s when he left for westcoast, the 80’s when he came back to Chicago, until 91 when everything stopped. Too much drugs and awaken nights… he killed his own batteries for the music. At least we still have the tapes of his talent and the memories of his friends. [Nicolas – 2002]

Death Disco Radio is proud to keep the light of Chicago legend Ron Hardy alive….

Ron Hardy is the only man who can test Frankie Knuckles’ status as the godfather of Chicago house music. Though he never recorded under his own name and left little evidence of his life, Hardy was the major name for Chicago dance music from the late ‘70s to the mid-’80s. By 1974, he had already effected a continuous music mix with reel-to-reel machines plus a dual-turntable setup at the club Den One. Several years later, Hardy played with Knuckles at a club called the Warehouse and though he spent several years in Los Angeles, he later returned to Chicago to open his own club, the Music Box.

While Knuckles was translating disco and the emerging house music to a straight, southside audience at the Power Plant, Hardy’s 72-hour mix sessions and flamboyant party lifestyle fit in well with the uptown, mostly gay audience at the Music Box. A roll-call of major Chicago producers including Marshall Jefferson, Larry Heard, Adonis, Phuture’s DJ Pierre and Chip E all debuted their compositions by pressing up acetates or reel-to-reel copies for Hardy to play during the mid-’80s. Lingering problems with heroin addiction forced him to leave the Music Box around 1986 and though he continued to DJ around the area, Hardy wasn’t around when Chicago became house music’s mecca later in the decade.

Death Disco Radio takes you to the heart of Seattle, to the Space Needle, where DJ Julia takes the west coast electro sound to new heights of excitement and glamour.

Introduced to music at an early age through that classic parental favorite, after-school piano lessons, Julia found the dance scene with New Mexico’s hedonistic desert raves. With the quickness of a bass drop, she swapped Mozart’s Ronda Alla Turka for the likes of DJ Brian’s Hard Desert Trance, and then it was late nights in abandoned airplane hangers and euphoric sunrise sessions. “Hard House had the warehouse scene sewn up, trance was big at the outdoor desert parties, deep and disco house also had a place” she recalls. “Then jungle and D&B stormed in. I thought that shiz was off the hook. We used to drive up to Santa Fe for D&B parties on the army base. Blah, blah, blah – yeah I was a party kid, but it helped bring me where I am today.” An aspiring DJ since ’98, Julia moved to Seattle a year later and bought decks. She has since held down residencies across town with just about everything that’ll make the club kids jump, from party jams at Le Freak and Cherry; house, dnb, electro and techno at clubs like Blu, Chop Suey, Mercury, The Baltic room and The War Room. The latter two styles make up the focus at her current monthly, Muse. “My favorite electro fuses the darker vibe of D&B and the crowd-pleasing beats of house with a nod to new wave and the early dance scene that got things going,” Julia says. “And who can’t resist a good old-fashioned techno stomper –bring it! I’m focusing on the new sounds that are going on with Electro these days – how it has fused with more dancefloor sounds such as Techno and House and even Disco. With my club night I am hoping to help bring a new type of sound to Seattle. Some call it Grime Electro, I like the term Electrotech – however you label it I am always pushing for something fresh while still keeping it old school by playing mostly vinyl sets.” “Seattle’s scene has really heated back up. I’ve been playing out quite a bit these days and have gotten back into production. Now I’m ready to move things forward.” Off the decks, Julia works as a designer and Flash and Web programmer and she appeared in a short film, Gak, in which she also did a lot of the music production.

Listening to the very talented young DJ Patricia Starr is like listening to your new favorite album that takes you on an emotional journey and leaves you off with a tingle in your stomach wanting more. New York’s No. 1 female DJ and huge talent in her own right is a self described “music maniac” breaking down musical barriers between genres of electronic music. DJ Patricia Starr is an equal opportunity Mixmaster –Tribal, Progressive, Electro, Vocal & Tech House music get mixed, blended and perfectly layered onto one another yet somehow it all makes sense like an interesting story with surprising twists and turns. First being drown to turntables after being inspired by one of her favorite DJs Junior Vasquez, Patricia Started playing in the NYC club circuit in the late 90’s and very quickly became a key player working with major DJs in the early stages of her career. Subsequently she has landed residencies at NYC chic downtown hotspots NV and Chaos, making her one of the first ever female DJs to hold multiple residencies at the busiest celebrity infested parties and gaining her popularity among promoters. Moving on to reside on the main floor of the legendary China Club and DJing parties for celebrities like Tara Reid, Wycleff Jean, Julez Santana, Busta Rythmes, Tommy Hilfeiger, Fabolous & Janice Dickinson of Americas Next Top Model just to name a few Patricia Starr was becoming a well known face on the New York music scene. In 1999 she was featured with Funkmaster Flex and Eddie Baez in 411 Magazine and later in other key industry publications like DJ Times, Hamptons Magazine, RIX Mag, W.H.A.T. recently in New York Daily News and page 6 of the New York Post. Patricia has also worked alongside many celebrity DJs like Robbie Rivera, Sizzahandz, Junior Jack, Funkmaster Flex, Pete Tong, Boris and Skribbles and extensively by herself throughout United States, Europe, Canada and Africa. Nevertheless Patricia Starr aims to make her mark as a producer having one of her remixes contribute to reaching a #2 spot on Billboard hot dance breakouts chart for maxi singles sales for Aria “Ti Amo” OH Music in February 2003. For production Patricia chooses Apple Logic Pro 7 which she says fits her needs perfectly enabling her to express her musical personality. Having classical training in piano as well as New York University Music Technology training creates a perfect combination for an inspired young producer who is also her own recording engineer and DJ making a complete lethal package. To truly take in the DJ Patricia Starr experience it’s a must to catch her live, which these days seems to be in New York City’s hottest mega clubs and lounges like Crobar, Quo or Butter, or on festival stages scattered throughout the world, where she works her magic in front of thousands of fans. Good guys never make it to the top. Ours is an era in which most of the people who ‘break through’ barely deserve to be allowed to live, never mind have their own radio shows. However, the rise and rise of The Model has been almost enough to rekindle my faith in that old adage about cream floating to the surface. His biography is starting to look unnervingly like the kind of Mid-West fairy story that all-American mothers tell their God-fearing, homeland-loving kids before they go to bed. Given that 99% of the radio jocks and big name DJs in Romania couldn’t tell you the difference between prog-house and prog-rock, The Model’s sudden burst onto the Romanian scene was long overdue. However, it was The Model signing to Gigolo Records back in 2005 that came as the first real vindication of that all-too illusory ‘ladder of success’. Though it might have been a pleasant surprise, I can’t say that it’s been entirely unexpected. From the first time that he started listening to electronic music in 1995, inspired by a trip to the States, to his first experiences in production five years later, The Model has displayed an all-consuming passion for what he does. It was the unavailability of the music that had so inspired him in the US that drove him to his first, more industrial sounding sonic experiments. As the neo-liberal mantra goes, Radu was simply plugging a gap in the market. The same goes for his establishment of his own Elektro.Casnice label in the same year: nobody else was making use of the huge pool of talent that existed in the Sibiu area. Radu managed not only to develop a powerful group identity for the artists he drew around him, but also managed to provide huge motivation towards their collective success. The first Romanian producer to get signed to Gigolo; the first Romanian producer to have a release on the seminal techno label Traum; The Model is not only blazing a trail, but bringing others with him. It’s no surprise then, that Elektro.Casnice label-mate Mihai Popviciu and Masstyk were signed to Gigolo alongside The Model. I can’t even pretend to know what to expect from him next. If he announced that he was going to write the Great American Novel, or start an oil company, I’d probably believe him. And although I still don’t believe that good guys make it to the top, if the Model keeps going like this, I might just have to revise my ideas. Tom Wilson [march 2006].
